Dental Crowns & Bridges
Your teeth are designed to last a lifetime, but that might not happen for a variety of reasons. Over the years, one or more of your teeth may become damaged or lost through trauma or decay. If so, you don’t have to live with a less-than-stellar smile. The dentists at Roxbury Family Dentistry in Succasunna, New Jersey, offer restorative dentistry services using high-quality crowns and bridges.
Over the last several decades, crowns and bridges have proven to deliver reliable results. These time-tested dental restorations have been used to effectively restore function, form, and beauty to the smiles of countless patients. And that’s important because your smile is one of the first things people notice—and one of the last things they forget.
Crows and Bridges: What’s the Difference?
A dental crown is a custom tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged tooth with intact roots. A crown may be a good solution for restoring a tooth that is cracked, discolored, decayed, worn down, or otherwise damaged or unattractive. Once in place, a precisely fitted crown will protect, strengthen, and improve the appearance of the tooth, and restore the tooth’s normal functions, such as biting, chewing, and speaking. A crown can also be placed over a dental implant.
A dental bridge consists of two or more dental crowns with an artificial tooth fused in between them. The crowns are secured to the teeth on either side of a gap, and the artificial tooth fills the space left by one or more missing teeth. An artfully crafted bridge can blend beautifully with the surrounding natural teeth.
We Offer All Types of Crowns & Bridges
Crowns and bridges can be made of different materials, such as gold, metal alloy, porcelain, zirconia, and porcelain fused to metal. Your dentist at Roxbury Family Dentistry can explain the pros and cons of each type and recommend the best option for your needs and budget. When custom-crafted from today’s high-tech materials, a dental restoration can be virtually indistinguishable from the surrounding natural teeth. In fact, it can even be designed to improve the appearance of the original teeth.
Usually, crowns and bridges are completed in two appointments. During your first appointment, your dentist will prepare the affected tooth or teeth by removing a small portion of the enamel. Next, your dentist will make impressions of your teeth, which will be sent to the dental lab that will create your crown or bridge. Finally, your dentist will create and place a temporary crown or bridge in your mouth, which will remain there until your permanent restoration is delivered (usually in a few weeks). During your second appointment, your dentist will remove the temporary restoration and place your permanent crown or bridge.
